City Council seeking applicants to fill north ward vacancy

Bainbridge Island residents interested in serving on the City Council have until 4 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 25 to apply to fill a vacancy created by the resignation of Councilmember Kol Medina who held Position No. 2 in the north ward.

Residents interested in applying for the Council vacancy must have lived in the City of Bainbridge Island for at least one year prior to Council appointment, must currently live in the north ward, and be registered to vote. Click here to view the ward map on the City’s website to confirm your residence is in the north ward.

The term of the vacated position will begin once a qualified candidate is appointed by a majority vote of the Council. The appointed Councilmember will hold office until a qualified person is elected to the position at the next general municipal election, in November 2021, and after the results of that election have been certified.

The timeline for filling the Council vacancy is as follows:

  • Wednesday, Nov. 25: Applications are due to City Clerk by 4:00 p.m.
  • Tuesday, Dec. 1:  Candidate interviews are held at the Dec. 1 City Council study session and finalists are selected. If all six Council members are unanimous in their selection of a first-choice candidate, the Council will consider whether to continue the selection process to a second meeting.
  • Tuesday, Dec. 8: Finalist interviews, if needed, are held at the Dec. 8 City Council meeting, and a new Councilmember is selected.
  • Week of Dec. 14: New Councilmember is sworn in and attends Dec. 15 meeting.

Application forms are available on the City’s website at
