Traffic Notice: Plan Ahead for Night Closures of SR 305 Agate Pass Bridge

Agate Pass

Please see the important message below from WSDOT.

Drivers are encouraged to plan for a three-week series of late night State Route 305 Agate Pass Bridge closures in December. These will allow Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) bridge maintenance crews to remove and replace seven elevated steel bridge beams. The beams were damaged last year when they were struck by an over-height load.

WSDOT will complete this work at night to help minimize traffic effects. However, the nature of the project will require WSDOT’s crews to close the bridge for up to nearly three hours at a time while they work. Heavy equipment will use both lanes on the bridge while crews remove and reinstall heavy steel.

As this is the only bridge to Bainbridge Island, WSDOT will have brief openings during the night when drivers, bicyclists and pedestrians can cross.

Sunday through Thursday nightly schedule, Dec. 2-21 (No work Friday or Saturday nights)

  • 8 p.m. to 10 p.m. – One-way alternating traffic
  • 10 p.m. to 11:59 p.m. – Bridge closed to traffic
  • 11:59 p.m. to 12:15 a.m. – One-way alternating traffic
  • 12:15 a.m. to 3 a.m. – Bridge closed bridge to traffic
  • 3 a.m. to 3:15 a.m. – One-way alternating traffic
  • 3:15 a.m. to 4 a.m. – Bridge closed to traffic
  • 4 a.m. to 5:30 a.m. – One-way alternating traffic

WSDOT will work to accommodate emergency responders during the closures.

It is critical that WSDOT complete these repairs in advance of a bridge-painting project that will begin in 2019. Coupled with our annual inspection activities in February, this timeframe provided a window of opportunity that we are acting on.

Tools for trip planning

Washington State Ferry service will continue, and drivers are encouraged to alter their plans by allowing more time to reach the Bainbridge Island terminal, or to consider using the Bremerton or Kingston routes.

Travelers can check the Kitsap County construction page for advance notice of bridge closures. Real time information is available via the statewide travel alerts map.
