Island Center Subarea Planning Process Steering Committee Special Meeting - Walking Tour
Sunday, June 9, 2019
This will be the first in a series of informal walking tours, each exploring a portion of Island Center. The tour begins on the west side of Fletcher Bay Road across the street from Sawatdy Thai. This walk, which he calls “Scratching the Surface,” will be led by steering committee member Michael Loverich.
The focus will be identifying traces left in the land where geology and culture intersect between Fletcher Bay and Springridge Roads. We’ll begin by looking underground; buried beneath the tour's starting point and out of sight, at an ongoing contaminated water extraction project. As we move west, we’ll encounter traces of agriculture in fading away strawberry furrows, skid roads and rock walls. We will walk a portion of Springbrook Creek, a ravine modified by nature and multiple infrastructure and agricultural projects, as we discuss its future transformations.
All are welcome. Please allow one hour for the tour. We will be walking off-road on uneven terrain and uncleared trails.
