Springbrook Creek Watershed Study
Project Description
A watershed-scale assessment to identify and develop conceptual designs for future salmon habitat improvement and protection which may include removing fish passage barriers, enhancing riparian habitat, returning the stream to historical flow channels, and protecting intact habitat through acquisition or conservation.
As a project partner, City staff and volunteers are conducting water quality and flow monitoring of baseline watershed conditions and providing survey-grade mapping in support of restoration/enhancement/protection project conceptual design.
We are always looking for new, motivated volunteers. If you are interested in helping out with this project, please contact us!
In coordination with the BI Land Trust, on February 28, 2019, an open house and presentation was held for the Springbrook Creek Watershed Assessment.
Project partners include:
- Bainbridge Island Land Trust (Project Lead)
- Bainbridge Island Watershed Council
- West Sound Watersheds Council
- Wild Fish Conservancy
Importance of Project
Springbrook Creek, also known as Springridge Brook Creek, is a historical steelhead stream and one of the most productive salmonid streams on the Island, supporting populations of cutthroat trout, coho, and chum.
In addition to its local significance, this project is a near-term action of the Puget Sound Partnership’s Action Agenda to recover Puget Sound ecosystem health.
A segment of this stream is currently state-listed as impaired by fecal coliform bacteria, and long-term monitoring by the City’s Water Quality and Flow Monitoring Program has identified additional impacts on stream flow and biological communities.
