For 55 years, Bainbridge Youth Services has worked to promote the social and emotional well being of youth in our community.
Our work is primarily focused on providing free and confidential one to one counseling for youth ages 12-21. We have 8part time counselors who see youth at Sakai, Woodward, Eagle Harbor High School and Bainbridge High School. In 2016, we provided 3,000 hours of counseling to youth who are seeking help with anxiety, depression, peer issues, family issues, academic stress, gender identity issues and suicide ideation.
To expand our reach and reduce barriers to access, we have also developed a website where youth and parents can confidentially post questions to either a trained counselor or a physician. AskBYS.org is also a rich resource center where information can be sought and appointments with our counselors can be made. Responses to posted questions can be expected within two business days.
In order to improve the overall well being of youth, BYS started a community conversation in partnership with the Rotary Club of Bainbridge Island, the Bainbridge Island School District and Raising Resilience to look at ways our Island can become a healthier place for kids to grow and thrive. We have 6 Healthy Youth Summits (conversations between youth and adults) and identified ways we can improve our community for our youth. Through the Summits, and extensive surveying and data gathering, over 800 youth told us they wanted their voices heard, help finding their passions and to be celebrated for who they are, not what they do.
