About the City Manager
As of March 1, Ellen Schroer is serving as Interim City Manager. City Manager Blair King retired on January 30th, after 45 years of public service.
The City of Bainbridge Island operates under a Council-Manager form of government, meaning the City Council selects and hires the Interim City Manager and City Manager. The City Manager reports directly to the City Council. City Staff report to the City Manager.
The process to recruit and select the next City Manager is underway. This page will be updated as new information becomes available.
City Manager Search
- Who is responsible for leading the recruitment and selection process?
- This is a Council-led process. In a Council-City Manager form of government, the City Council directs the recruitment and hiring process. City Council has established a subcommittee (Deputy Mayor Kirsten Hytopoulos, Councilmember Ashley Mathews, and Councilmember Brenda Fantroy-Johnson) to facilitate communication between the recruitment firm Raftelis and the City Council. Staff is also supporting this process.
- Is the recruitment being handled by an external consultant or by City staff?
- The City Council has contracted with Raftelis, a consulting firm that provides a range of services to local governments, including executive recruitment.
- How can residents share input about what they want in a new City Manager?
- Residents are able to share their input by completing a City Manager Recruitment Survey. The survey will be open through March 20th. The survey will help City Council understand, from the perspective of the community and City staff the qualities, knowledge, skills, and abilities that matter most in the next City Manager. The survey was developed by the Council-approved recruitment firm and reflects the City Council's priorities along with those identified in the Comprehensive Plan. It was also reviewed and approved by the Council subcommittee leading the recruitment of the next City Manager.
