Lost Valley Trails Project
News and alerts
The Lost Valley trail within the wetland area near Cooper Creek is closed until a permanent boardwalk can be built over this environmentally sensitive area. The proposed route of the new boardwalk is muddy, making this area temporarily impassable and causing damage to the wetland. Construction of a permanent boardwalk that is elevated above the wetland is scheduled to begin early summer of 2026.
On March 26th, the Public Works Engineering team planted native greenery along a new trail segment connecting Eagle Harbor Drive to Finch Road.
Once overrun with ivy and blackberry, the area is getting a fresh start with rhododendron, strawberry, kinnickinnick, salal, sword fern, snowberry, and native roses.
Project overview
The City proposes to provide public access to the City’s Lost Valley properties for passive recreational use, and to provide a non-motorized connection between Wyatt Way and Fletcher Bay Road. This connection is envisioned as part of a larger trail network between downtown Winslow and Gazzam Lake Park.
September 2025: The City issued a work request to the Bainbridge Island Metro Park & Recreation District to construct the boardwalk through the wetland adjacent to Cooper Creek. This work is scheduled to take place in the summer of 2026.
August 2025: The City received permit approval to make trail improvements, Bainbridge Island Metro Park & Recreation District's Student Conservation Corps removed invasive plant species as part of the project mitigation and permit requirements, and City crews removed the berm and created the trail connection from Lost Valley to Carmella Lane.
July 2025: Obtaining project permits with construction estimated to begin in August.
January 2025: A survey consultant was hired and is surveying the proposed trail with the survey to be completed in February.
December 2024: The City hired a consultant to perform the wetland delineation and permitting documents with the report to be completed in February.
On November 21, 2021, a public meeting was held via Zoom. View the Lost Valley Trail public meeting.
