In order to protect the City of Bainbridge Island water supply, the City established a Cross-Connection Control Program codified in the Bainbridge Island Municipal Code (BIMC) Chapter 13.20 and in accordance with the Washington Administrative Code (WAC) 246-290-490. These state and local laws require the City to have all premises surveyed by a licensed cross connection specialist which may require installation of a backflow to isolate any potential hazard that may be present.
Drinking water is used for a variety of purposes including non-potable uses such as lawn irrigation, fire suppression and industrial processes. These different uses can result in possible contamination of potable drinking water if not properly protected by a backflow prevention assembly.
Upon installation and annually thereafter, a backflow is required to be tested by a certified backflow tester. Customers can choose between two types of backflow testing to ensure they are in compliance with BIMC 13.20 and State requirements:
